Financial struggles have left
the Minnesota Museum of
American Art without a home
for almost two years now, but
it does have strong collections
in storage—including ceramics
and metalwork from the 1950s
to the Yos-and a new director,
Kristin Makholm, who is deter-
mined to show off its treasures
while it reconstitutes. Through
October 22, the Drake Gallery
at St. Paul Academy is hosting
a show of important ceramics
from the holdings, such as a
1959 stoneware vase by Peter
Voulkos. Makholm is reportedly
thinking about developing
craft as a niche for the museum
(mmaa.org).

Remembrance
Thomas S. Buechner, an early
proponent of the studio glass
movement, died at his home in
Corning,
N Y ,
on June 13. Born
in 1926, Buechner was the first
director of the Corning Mu-
seum of Glass (1950-60) before
becoming director of the Brook-
lyn Museum (1960-71). He later
served as the Coming Muse-
um’s president.

for over five decades, died on
June 3. Born in 1925, she joined
